Okay so about My Slave Twenty Three/Van Hohenheim.

He’s at the point where he was teaching the other slaves to read and write, but he isn’t his masters apprentice yet. 

Which is also why he says you can call him either Van Hohenheim or Number Twenty-three.

He’s relearning how to rea din write in the Amestrin Language, assuming it’s different from the Language in Xerxes.
